The Law of Attraction
Updated: Jul 9
Learning how to magnetize yourself for miracles, manifest abundance, and create the life of your dreams ⋮
I’d heard this idea, the “law of attraction”, thrown around in the spiritual community a couple years ago and it instantly drew me in. It sounded so magical & enticing. It was this idea that you could choose to invite certain things into your life; create the life of your dreams with the power of thought. Who wouldn't want that?
This law is said to:
“…use the power of the mind to translate whatever is in our thoughts and materialize them into reality”
The law functions on the use of focus and intention; being mindful of our thought patterns, our decision making, and our visions. It requires no more than a shift in thinking; a shift in mindset.
Now don't get me wrong, I do believe there's some magic involved, or at least help and guidance from unseen forces. But it doesn’t just happen on it’s own- it requires you to put in work on the forefront.
The majority of my knowledge on the subject had, up until this point, come from personal research and various mentions of the law in books I was reading. It wasn't until I started reading The Secret last week that my understanding deepened significantly. In this blog post, I'm going to be giving you a basic outline of the law, but I highly recommend you read The Secret for a more in-depth understanding!
I've had much personal success with the practices I'm about to share with you, as have many people I've met. I've also witnessed first-hand the power of attraction/manifestation, and the abundance it brings.
So to share the magic, I'm going to walk you through my understanding of this law and put it into real world context so you can master this magical art of manifestation and abundance for yourself.
Intention setting is one of the most, if not THE most, important aspect of manifestation*.
*While these two terms go hand in hand, I should explain the difference between manifestation and the law of attraction. Manifestation is the coming-to-be of your thoughts, dreams, and visions. It’s the actual appearance of things into your life. The Law of Attraction, on the other hand, is the theory of how we can master the art of said manifestation and make it happen more frequently for ourselves.
So back to intentions. This is the first step; the equivalent of “setting your compass” so to speak. Setting your intentions is how you communicate with the universe (and yourself) where you would like to go; what you would like to do. Without a clear vision of where you’re going, your compass is just going to keep spinning. This prevents the occurrence of miracles that would lead you further on your path because, well, there is no path.
If you don't set your intentions, you won’t be attracting the things you want into your life because you’re giving off mixed energy signals. There’s no clear frequency to your energy and therefore, you’re essentially allowing yourself to remain de-magnetized.
So how do we set an intention?
Most often, this is done in statement phrases. For example:
I will travel to Europe.
I will start my own online business.
I will be surrounded by an abundance of likeminded friends.
These phrases are to be written as specifically (and as often) as possible. For example, if you know exactly where you want to go in Europe, when, with whom, etc you could instead say:
I will travel to Copenhagen, Denmark next year with my best friend.
It may be hard to fully believe these phrases at first, but just keep writing them daily. As I will talk about later, this practice will help to rewire your brain and change your thought processes. It will help you to believe these things are actually possible and that they will happen.
Another valuable intention-setting practice besides journaling is the creation of dream boards. This is a more visual intention-setting practice but serves the same purpose. It offers a chance to visualize and dream up your future in detail.
To make a dream board, you simply need a poster, piece of paper, piece of cardboard, etc. Really anything you can glue or tape pictures onto (you just have to decide how big you want the board to be!).
Once you’ve got a board, you simply need to cut and past words, phrases, and pictures that align with your future. These will make up a sort of collage that will end up being your dream board. (I often use magazines or print off the images I wish to use).
Once it’s done, you should hang it in your room or somewhere where you will see it every day. It will serve as a visual reminder of what you are trying to manifest!
The more specific you are, the clearer your vision of the future. With a clear vision of the future, you can start to make decisions that align with that vision rather than making decisions that align with the vision of how you think your future has to look.
"By visualizing my desired outcome, the perfect action is always inspired" - Abraham Hicks
Its all about realizing what you want, and then knowing it so clearly that you're prepared to act on any and every opportunity might pop up in regards to your desired destination.
More on how intentions actually work later. For now, let's look at some more law of attraction practices.
Just as important as realizing what you want is realizing what you already have. Gratitude in itself creates abundance because it makes us realize how much we already hold in our lives. Like intention-setting, practicing gratitude creates a mindset shift.
For example, let's say you were trying to manifest a more money into your life. By journaling about all the things you're thankful for, you may realize that you actually have too much stuff. This may lead you to sell some of your things, not only resulting instantly in more money (which you were trying to manifest), but in more space.
I believe that our external space is a reflection of our internal space. The more organized and cleaned up our external space is, the more clarity we're able to find internally. Without all the external clutter, you will have more mental clarity when it comes to visualizing and manifesting your dreams.
By realizing you have too much stuff, you may also realize that you don't need to keep making so many purchases. Which again, would result in more money as a result of saving.
But that's just one example! Gratitude journaling has so many benefits and overall makes your life feel richer and more full. I can be used to aid in the manifestation of any dream!
Gratitude journaling is as simple as writing out things that you're grateful for. This can be done in short phrases, sentences, whatever you would like!
I am grateful for sunrises.
I am grateful for a place to lay my head.
I am grateful that I have an income stream.
I am grateful for my friends.
Releasing Limiting Beliefs
Just as important as intention setting is the removal of limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs are beliefs you have that keep you from reaching your goals. We all have them. Examples could be:
I’m not good enough.
Everyone else is better than me.
I don’t have the tools I need to make this happen.
These beliefs are not true, nor do they serve any practical purpose. They simply get in our way. We simply get in our own ways by believing them.
In one of my favorite guided meditations, the speaker says
“Let go of everything that does not serve you. Let go of anything that does not support you in becoming your highest most radiant self.”
If you want to manifest your dreams, you have to release the limiting beliefs that tell you it’s not possible.
Again, I’ve found the best way to do this is to journal- this time with statements that directly contradict your limiting beliefs. For example, if we felt that the beliefs written above were holding us back, we would write:
I am good enough.
I am just as worthy of success as anyone else.
I have everything I need inside of me to make this happen.
What we are doing here is literally rewiring the brain. We're getting it to think in different ways about what is really possible in our lives. This helps us to change our conditioned thought patterns into patterns that support our visions, not work against them.
"When your mind changes, your brain changes, too…when neurons fire together, they wire together--mental activity actually creates new neural structures...What flows through your mind sculpts your brain. Thus, you can use your mind to change your brain for the better--which will benefit your whole being, and every other person whose life you touch." - Rick Hanson Ph.D. (Excerpt from Buddha’s Brain)
You can literally change the chemical makeup and neural pathways of the brain with your thoughts. This is how this journaling practice works! It gets you to start thinking positively believing that your dreams are possible!
How This All Works
When put together, these practices all help to clear up our vision of the future and convince our minds that the achievement of these dreams is possible.
Clarity on our visions will help us to realize opportunities when they pop up and effectively make decisions regarding these opportunities to further us on our paths.
For example, if you did not decide on a travel destination and set the intention of going to Europe; if you did not believe it was possible for you to say yes and go, what would happen if you overheard a coworker talking about their upcoming trip? You might just keep on walking and continue with your thoughts about what you were going to make for dinner. OR, had you set the intention of going and truly believed in your heart that you were able, you may have heard that conversation and joined in, gaining valuable insight as to how your co-worker got such an incredibly cheap flight and how you can do the same. That’s were the magic lives.
It lives in the space we can only see when we open our eyes. When we open ourselves up to seeing the signs and receiving the miracles.
That is how the Law of Attraction works. It says that if we open our eyes to exactly what it is that we want; if we truly believe we can have it and remain open to the possibilities that surround us- we will begin to see miracles. We will inspired to take actions that will lead us towards our dreams and begin to see plans working in our favor. And as we continue to live our lives with purpose and direction. We will begin to see opportunities that we had closed ourselves off to before.
It’s simply a law that tells you of the magic that can happen if you rewire your brain and open your eyes.
"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." -Paulo Coehlo (The Alchemist)
So start thinking more about your future. Think about what you want it to look like in as much detail as possible, and journal about it when you can. Start making yourself believe that its already set in stone; that it’s already, without a doubt, going to happen.
But don’t forget as your dreams unfold, to remain unattached to how and when they manifest. You can set your compass and align your frequency, but you have to leave the universe in charge of navigating. For only it can pave the perfect path, align you with just the right people, and make things happen in the exact time necessary for your dreams to manifest.
Follow the signs, be open to receiving miracles and plot twists, and above all, trust the journey.
